Description

Latin Name: Pterocarpus Soyauxii

Origin Country: Congo

Pterocarpus soyauxii or commonly known as African Coralwood is an evergreen or deciduous species in the Fabaceae family and it is native to central and tropical west Africa. African Coralwood has a flaky reddish-gray bark, pinnate and alternate leaves, and fruits that are round pods containing one seed each. The crown is open and dome-shaped. Leaves and young shoots are cooked and eaten as vegetables. It is imparting a pleasant and mild woodsy scent. Traditionally, the red pigment extracted from the bark has been historically used as a natural dye. The bark of Pterocarpus soyauxii, when brewed as tea, has an earthy, mildly woody, and slightly astringent flavour with subtle bitter undertones. The taste can be enhanced by blending it with other herbs, spices, or sweeteners like honey.

Benefits

– Pterocarpus Soyauxii may help reduce joint pain, due to its bioactive compounds.

– It may assist in easing digestive discomfort, bloating, or mild gastrointestinal issues.

– Coralwood may contribute to overall immune support and aid in faster wound healing, when applied topically, due to its potential antimicrobial properties.

– Coralwood Tea

Bring the 2 cups of water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, add 1-2 teaspoons of African Coral wood bark. Lower the heat and let it simmer gently for about 15 to 20 minutes. This will allow the properties of the bark to infuse into the water. Then take it off the heat and let it steep for an additional 10 minutes and strain the tea to remove all pieces of bark. You can add honey or lemon to improve the taste.

If you are new to drinking coralwood tea, it’s wise to start with a small amount, such as 1 cup (about 8 oz) per day, and see how your body reacts.

Natural Dyeing

The bark of coralwood is sometimes used in natural dyeing, especially for fabrics. In order to do that, boil the bark in water to extract its colour, which can then be used to dye fabrics or other materials.

– Pterocarpus soyauxii is generally considered safe for people when used appropriately, however it’s crucial to exercise caution and consult with a healthcare provider.

– Some individuals may experience skin irritation, rashes, or respiratory issues when exposed to the bark.

– Coralwood may cause nausea, stomach pain, or diarrhoea when consumed in excessive amounts.

– It is recommended to avoid Coralwood during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
