Rhamnus frangula, commonly known as Alder Buckthorn or Frangula, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that belongs to the Rhamnaceae family. It is native to Europe and parts of Asia Rhamnus frangula has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, particularly its bark, which is known for its laxative properties. Rhamnus frangula is used in various forms, including dried bark and teas, mainly for digestive health. The flavour of alder buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) bark is bitter and astringent.

– Alder Buckthorn Bark Tea

Take 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried cut bark and place it in 1-2 cups of boiling water. Let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes to extract the active compounds. Strain the bark and discard it.

Drink the tea once or twice a day, preferably in the evening, to relieve constipation.

– Rhamnus frangula is generally safe for short-term consumption in recommended doses.

– Alder Buckthorn may cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, stomach discomfort, particularly if taken in excessive amounts.

– It can lead to dehydration, especially if taken frequently or in large doses and it may cause dizziness, weakness, fatigue or muscle cramps.

– Alder buckthorn should not be used for extended periods (more than 1–2 weeks) as may be toxic, causing symptoms like severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and dehydration.

– Pregnant and breastfeeding women should AVOID using alder buckthorn.
