Common Names: Astragalus mongholicus, Milk Vetch, Mongolian Milk
Parts Used: Root
Origin Country: China
Astragalus membranaceus, also known as Huang Qi or milkvetch, is a flowering plant in the legume family Fabaceae. It is one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant is native to Mongolia, the Korean Peninsula, and major regions of northern and north-eastern China. Featuring compound leaves and small, pale yellow flowers that bloom in clusters. It also has a sweet, slightly sour taste, like some exotic fruit, ending with a distinctly soapy sweet aftertaste.
Benefits
– Astragalus membranaceus is known for its ability to enhance the immune system and it is often used to prevent colds, flu, and other respiratory infections.
– Astragalus helps the body adapt to stress and restores balance.
– It may have skin-protective properties, helping to improve skin hydration and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
– Astragalus Tea
Add 1–2 teaspoons of cut astragalus root to a pot of water. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it simmer for about 20–30 minutes to extract the active compounds from the root. Strain the tea to remove the root pieces. Add sweeteners or flavourings like honey, ginger, or lemon if desired. Enjoy 1–2 cups per day for immune support and overall health.
Dosage Recommendations
– A typical daily dose of astragalus root is about 1–3 teaspoons of cut root, but it’s important to start small and see how your body responds.
– Astragalus membranaceus is generally considered safe for most people when consumed in moderate amounts.
– However, some people may experience allergic reactions, such as skin rashes, itching, or swelling.
– Astragalus may cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, or stomach upset, particularly if taken in large amounts.
– Pregnant and breastfeeding women should AVOID take astragalus root.
Storage: Keep it in an airtight container (glass jars or resealable bags work well) and place it in a cool, dry, and dark area—such as a cupboard or pantry. Avoid exposure to heat, moisture, or direct sunlight, as these can degrade its potency and shelf life. For longer storage, you can also refrigerate or freeze it in a sealed bag to maintain freshness.
