Description

Latin Name : Rhamus Frangula

Origin Country: Poland

Buckthorn (Rhamnus Frangula), also referred to as black alder, is an herb that comes from the bark of the stems and branches of the rhamnus frangula tree.

Buckthorn bark contains compounds called anthraquinones, which have a strong purgative, laxative effect on the body. Because these compounds are powerful, before being processed into laxative products the bark is aged for a year, or heated and dried.

  • Constipation : Buckthorn bark can be used to ease constipation. The compounds in buckthorn bark increase the colon’s ability to spontaneously contract. They also reduce water absorption by the intestines, which means more liquid is left in the colon. This produces larger volume and softer stools, which in turn eases constipation.
  • Hemorrhoids : Treat hemorrhoids and anal fissures. Because buckthorn bark is an effective stool softener, it can make bowel movements more comfortable for people with hemorrhoids or anal fissures, or who are recovering from recto-anal surgery. Sometimes, buckthorn bark is also used to cleanse the colon in preparation for gastrointestinal diagnostic procedure.
  • Internally the herb is considered to act as a laxative positive even in colic, gastritis, stomach and duodenal ulcers and as a cholagogue in liver diseases, gold and intestinal worms.

Infusion: place one tablespoon of dried herbs into a ceramic teapot, mug or mason jar for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer) and let steep for 10-15 minutes or overnight. Decoction: In a pot, bring 3 cups of cold water, 3-4 teaspoons of the to a simmer. Gently decoct (simmer) for 30 minutes. Strain out herbs and return liquid to pot. Add if you want one spoonful of honey at a time and dissolve over very low heat until you reach desired sweetness.
Alder buckthorn is POSSIBLY SAFE for most adults when taken by mouth for less than 8-10 days. Taking alder buckthorn by mouth for more than 8-10 days is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. It might cause low potassium, heart problems, stomach problems, muscle weakness and blood problems, including blood in the urine. Some people get uncomfortable cramps from alder buckthorn. If you experience diarrhea or watery stools while using alder buckthorn, stop taking it. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
