Elettaria cardamomum L., commonly known as green cardamom, is a perennial plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, which also includes ginger and turmeric. Native to the lush, tropical forests of southern India and Sri Lanka, this aromatic spice is often referred to as the “queen of spices” due to its distinctive sweet, floral, and slightly spicy flavour. The plant produces small green seed pods filled with tiny black seeds that are highly valued in culinary, medicinal, and aromatic applications. Cardamom is a key ingredient in many traditional dishes across Indian, Middle Eastern, and Scandinavian cuisines, commonly used in both savoury foods and desserts, as well as in tea and coffee.
