Uncaria tomentosa, commonly known as cat’s claw or uña de gato, is a woody vine native to the Amazon rainforest and other tropical areas of Central and South America. It has distinctive hooked thorns resembling a cat’s claw, which is how it got its common name. The plant has been used for centuries in traditional medicine by indigenous tribes for its various healing properties. Cat’s claw typically has a mild, earthy odour. Some people describe it as slightly woody or herbal. The flavour of cat’s claw is also relatively mild and can be somewhat bitter or astringent. It may have a slightly woody or vegetal taste with hints of bitterness.
