Vitex agnus-castus L., also known as chaste tree or chasteberry is a deciduous shrub native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family (mint family), and it has been traditionally valued for its berries and flowers. The plant features palmate leaves and long spikes of violet or pale blue flowers, followed by small, dark reddish-brown to black berries that resemble peppercorns in shape and size. Its berries are the most commonly used part and are typically dried and used to prepare teas. The flavour of the berries is peppery, slightly bitter, and pungent, which is why they were once used as a spice substitute in ancient times.

In a pot, bring 3 cups of cold water, 1-2 teaspoon of chasteberry to a simmer.

Gently decoct (simmer) for 30 minutes.

Strain out herbs and return liquid to pot.

Add if you want one spoonful of honey at a time and dissolve over very low heat until you reach desired sweetness.

– It contains flavonoids and other compounds that may help protect cells from oxidative stress and neutralise free radicals.

– Preliminary studies suggest Vitex may have mild anti-inflammatory effects, which can support general health.

– Vitex Agnus is generally considered safe when used in moderate amounts and properly.

– Rare though, some people may be allergic to chaste tree and face symptoms such as rash or itching.

– Some individuals may experience symptoms such as nausea, upset stomach, or diarrhoea, particularly when taken on an empty stomach.

– Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not consume chaste tree.
