Description

Latin Name: Zea Mays L.

Origin Country: Bulgaria

Zea mays, commonly known as maize or corn, is a cereal plant native to Central America, particularly in Mexico and it belongs to the Poaceae family. Corn silk is the long, silky threads that grow beneath the husk of a corn cob, extending from the top of each ear of corn. Corn is a staple food in many cultures, used for human consumption, animal feed, and industrial purposes. Maize is a rich source of carbohydrates and provides essential nutrients such as fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Corn silk is most commonly used in the form of tea and has a mild and slightly sweet flavour, with a grassy or herbal undertone.

Benefits

– Corn contains dietary fibre, which supports healthy digestion and prevents constipation.

– Corn Silk provides essential vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, magnesium, and iron, which contribute to overall well-being.

– Zea mays can contribute to a feeling of fullness, which may aid in weight management.

– Corn silk has been traditionally used for its diuretic properties, reducing water retention.

– Corn Silk Tea

Bring 1 cup of water (240 ml) to boil in a small saucepan or kettle. Once the water is boiling, add the dried 1-2 teaspoons of corn silk to the water. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes. After simmering, strain the tea to remove the corn silk threads from the liquid. Pour the tea into a cup and enjoy it hot.

You can add a bit of honey or lemon to enhance the flavour, if desired.

– Culinary Use

Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of corn silk cut to soups, stews, or broths for added flavour and nutritional benefits.

– Corn silk is generally considered safe for most people when used appropriately.

– Some individuals may have allergic reactions to corn silk, such as itching, rash, or difficulty breathing.

– Corn silk has diuretic properties, which can increase urine production lead to dehydration.

– Some people may experience mild stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhoea when consuming corn silk in large amounts.

– During pregnancy or breastfeeding, corn silk is considered safe, although it is essentially to consult a healthcare provider before using it.
