Description

Latin Name: Epimedium Grandiflorum

Origin Country: China

Epimedium grandiflorum, commonly known as Barrenwort or Bishop’s Hat, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Berberidaceae family. Native to parts of China, Japan, and Korea, it thrives in shaded, woodland environments and is prized for its attractive foliage and delicate, nodding flowers.

The common name “Horny Goat Weed” comes from ancient Chinese folklore and traditional medicine practices. According to legend, the name was inspired by the observation of goats and sheep that would frequently eat the plant’s leaves and then noticed the animals becoming unusually energetic and amorous.

The flavour of Epimedium grandiflorum is generally described as bitter and earthy, particularly when consumed in the form of a tea.
