Description
Latin Name : Solidago Gigantea L.
Country Origin: Hungary
The properties of goldenrod are similar to many other herbs: antifungal, diuretic, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, astringent, antiseptic, and carminative. However, the actions of goldenrod to the kidneys, urinary track, skin, allergies, and cardiovascular system are impressive.
- Astringent and antiseptic: Goldenrod has a history for use with the bladder and urinary system. The astringent and antiseptic qualities tighten and tone the urinary system and bladder making it useful for UTI infections. It is a kidney tropho-restorative, so it both nourishes and restores balance to the kidneys.
- Allergies: Its astringent property calms runny eyes, runny nose, and sneezing that comes with late summer and early fall allergies.
- Its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties make this a good choice for sore throats. As an expectorant, goldenrod can expel mucous easily from the lungs. The diaphoretic property of goldenrod helps to open pores of the skin to release sweat during a fever.
- Cardiovascular system: Goldenrod is a good source of the constituent rutin, a powerful flavonoid that benefits the cardiovascular system. Rutin has the ability to support circulation for the cardiovascular system as well as to increase capillary strength. Some say it is higher in anti-oxidants than green tea.
To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer).
Allow the mixture to steep for 10′ to 15′ minutes or overnight.
Then strain the tea and serve. Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day.
Add if you want honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavour.
Goldenrod is generally considered safe to use medicinally. Some people may have a mild allergic reaction to the plant.
It is not used by pregnant or lactating women and people with reduced heart or kidney function.
We do not use it on open wounds.
In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
