Description

Latin Name: Tuber Uncinatum

Origin Country: Greece

Tuber aestivum, commonly known as the summer truffle, is an edible truffle species found across Europe, particularly in limestone-rich soils near the roots of trees like oaks, hazelnuts, and beeches. It has a rough, black-brown outer skin with pyramid-shaped warts and a pale, marbled interior. The summer truffle has a milder, nutty, and slightly earthy aroma. It is typically harvested from late spring to early autumn and is used in gourmet cuisine to enhance dishes like pasta, risotto, eggs, and sauces. While less intense in flavour than other truffle varieties, it remains a sought-after delicacy due to its affordability and versatility in cooking. Truffles can be used in small quantities in a variety of recipes for that little bit more flavour. They can also be mixed in butter or olive oil and drizzled over the dishes.

The weight of each truffle approximately is 10-20 grams.

– Fresh summer truffles are often sliced or grated thinly and used as a garnish. The truffle’s delicate flavour pairs well with dishes like pasta, risotto, eggs, or salads.

– Add thin slices of fresh truffle to freshly cooked pasta or risotto just before serving. The heat from the dish will help release the truffle’s aroma and flavour without cooking it, keeping the delicate flavour intact.

– Summer truffles go particularly well with simple, fresh ingredients that won’t overpower their flavour. Try pairing them with fresh greens, eggs, potatoes, or cheeses.

Tips for Using Summer Truffle:

– Summer truffles lose their flavour over time, so it’s best to use them within a few days of purchasing or harvesting.

– Since the flavour of summer truffles is subtler than winter truffles, use them sparingly to add a touch of gourmet flavour without overwhelming your dish.

– Store fresh truffles in a paper towel in a cool, dark place, ideally in the fridge. Change the towel daily to maintain freshness.

– Tuber aestivum contains powerful antioxidants, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, which help fight oxidative stress and protect cells from damage.

– Truffles have bioactive compounds that may help strengthen the immune system.

– Summer truffles are a natural source of important nutrients, including proteins, fibre, vitamins (such as B vitamins), and minerals like zinc, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are essential for various bodily functions.

– They have antimicrobial properties, which could help regular bowel movements and health.

– Since summer truffles are naturally low in calories and fat while being rich in flavour, they are an excellent addition to a healthy diet.

– Tuber aestivum is generally considered safe for consumption and does not have significant side effects when eaten in moderation.

– However some people may be allergic to truffles, leading to symptoms such as skin rashes, itching, swelling, or respiratory issues in rare cases.

– Consuming large amounts of truffles, especially raw, may cause bloating, gas, or stomach discomfort due to their rich and fibrous nature.

– Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a health provider before using truffles.
