Ocimum tenuiflorum, commonly known as Holy Basil or Tulsi, is an aromatic herb native to India and Southeast Asia. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is widely cultivated for its culinary uses. The plant is a small, bushy shrub with green or purple-tinged oval leaves, serrated edges, and a strong, aromatic scent. It produces small purple or white flowers in terminal spikes. The name “Holy Basil” comes from its sacred status in Hinduism and in Sanskrit, it is called “Tulsi”, meaning “the incomparable one”. It is often planted around temples and homes as a symbol of purity, protection, and spiritual well-being. Holy Basil is differentiating from common basil (Ocimum basilicum), which is primarily used for culinary purposes.
