Vanilla planifolia, commonly known as vanilla, is a species of orchid native to Mexico and Central America and belongs to the Orchidaceae family. It is the primary source of natural vanilla flavoring, derived from its long, slender seed pods (often called vanilla beans). The plant is a climbing vine with thick, fleshy stems and large, flat, green leaves, and it produces pale greenish-yellow flowers that must be hand-pollinated outside of its native region. Once harvested, the vanilla pods undergo a lengthy curing process involving drying, sweating, and fermenting to develop their characteristic sweet, rich, and creamy aroma and taste. The flavour of vanilla is warm, aromatic, and slightly floral, widely used in culinary applications such as baking, desserts, and beverages.
Each of our pods weighs approximately 2-3 grams and its length it’s about 14-16cm.
The whole fruit has an aroma, so you can cut the pod into small pieces and use it in recipes when you want to add flavour. Another idea is to put the whole pod in a jug of lemonade or wine to give aroma. The pods have such a strong taste that it does not run out after their first use. So, when your drinks run out, you can use them again, after washing and drying them. When there is only the peel left, without strong aroma, put the vanilla in the jar of coffee or sugar and it will flavor them discreetly.
