Ruscus aculeatus, commonly known as butcher’s broom, is a low evergreen dioecious Eurasian shrub, with flat shoots known as cladodes that give the appearance of stiff spine-tipped leaves, and small greenish flowers appearing in spring. The common name butcher’s broom probably comes from the plant’s historical use by butchers, who used its stiff branches to sweep the floors of their shops. It is native to Eurasia and some northern parts of Africa and belongs to the family Asparagaceae. Ruscus aculeatus can be toxic if ingested in large quantities. But with proper processing, such as good cooking, it can be consumed as a tea. It has a slightly bitter and earthy taste.

Butcher’s Broom Tea (Infusion)

Boil 1 cup of water.  Heat water to a near-boiling point (around 200°F or 93°C). Add 1-2 teaspoons of dried butcher’s broom to a tea infuser or directly into your cup. Pour the hot water over it. Allow the tea to steep for 5-10 minutes, depending on how strong you like it. Add honey, lemon, or ginger to taste. Drink 1-2 cups per day.

– Some individuals may experience digestive discomfort, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
