Description

Latin Name: Plantago Indica

Common Names: Ispaghula

Parts Used: Seed, Husk

Origin Country: China

Plantago arenaria, commonly known as psyllium husks, is a plant species belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. Native to parts of Southern Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, grows in sandy soils, often in dry and arid environments, which is reflected in its name “arenaria,” meaning “of the sand.”

Psyllium husks are harvested from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant after the plant has fully matured and dried. The seeds are separated from the plant through threshing, and then the outer husks are mechanically removed in a gentle milling process. These husks are then cleaned, dried, and sifted to produce the final fibre-rich product used for health and dietary purposes. The husks are often consumed in smoothies, juices or yogurts as they have a very mild, neutral, or slightly earthy flavour.

Psyllium Smoothie

Add 1-2 teaspoons of psyllium husks and 1 cup of milk or yogurt into a blender. Blend until they smooth and then pour into a glass. This can help with digestion and provide a fibre boost. You can adjust the level of sweetness depending on your preference. For additional natural sweetness, you can add fruits like bananas or apples.

Basic Use

Measure 1-2 teaspoons of whole psyllium seeds and add them directly to 1 cup of water or juice (such as apple juice, orange juice, or any juice of your choice). Stir well to ensure that the seeds are evenly distributed. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes to allow the seeds to absorb the liquid and expand. You will notice that they will swell up and form a gel-like consistency. Once it has thickened, you can enjoy it.

Storage: To store Organic Psyllium Husks, keep them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. It is best to store them in an airtight container, such as a glass jar or a sealed plastic bag, to protect them from moisture and contaminants. Make sure the storage area is well-ventilated and dry, as exposure to moisture can cause the husks to clump and lose their effectiveness.
