Iris germanica, commonly known as the Bearded Iris got its name from the small, soft “beards” that protrude from the lower petals of the flowers. It is part of the Iridaceae family and is one of the most popular ornamental iris species. It is a flowering perennial plant native to Europe and parts of western Asia. It is traditionally used in the perfume industry, which is known for its pleasant, floral fragrance. The orris root has a sweet, floral, and slightly woody flavour with a subtle spicy undertone.

– Orris Tea:

Bring 1 cup (250ml) water to a near boil (about 90°C or 194°F). Add the 1/2 teaspoon dried orris root to a tea infuser or directly into the water. Let it steep for 5–10 minutes. Strain and drink warm, adding honey or lemon if desired. Drink only occasionally (no more than 1 cup per day) to avoid side effects.

– Culinary Use:

Historically, orris root was used in small quantities in liqueurs, sweets, or spice blends for flavour. It is more commonly used in older recipes, but it should be used with caution due to its strong, bitter flavour.

– Iris germanica is considered safe for use in moderate amounts.

– Excessive doses of orris root can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea or to more serious symptoms such as dizziness, lethargy.

– Inhaling powdered or dried root can irritate the respiratory tract, leading to coughing or difficulty breathing in sensitive individuals.

–  Orris root is NOT recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
