Cassia senna, commonly known as senna, is a plant species belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). It is also known as cassia senna, wild senna, cassia marilandica, or locust plant.
Cassia senna is a small shrub or herbaceous plant with bright yellow flowers. It typically grows in warm regions such as North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia.
It is a sweet, cooling and laxative herb. Cassia senna typically has a mild to moderate door. The scent can be described as slightly earthy, herbal, or vegetal. It has a distinctly bitter taste.
– Herbal tea:
Use about ½ to 1 teaspoon (1–2 grams) of dried senna leaves per cup (240 ml) of hot water. Pour freshly boiled water over the leaves and let them steep for 5 to 10 minutes. The longer it steeps, the stronger the laxative effect. Strain the leaves and drink the tea, preferably at bedtime, as senna usually works within 6 to 12 hours. Do not take for more than 7 consecutive days.
– Senna is widely used to relieve occasional constipation by stimulating bowel movements
– Senna is increasingly included in herbal teas that claim to boost metabolism and promote weight loss.
– Senna leaves contain essential oils and tannins that help to alleviate skin inflammation.
