Latin Name: Bolus Alba
Origin Country: France
Bolus Alba, also known as Kaolinite or white clay, is a naturally occurring clay mineral composed primarily of kaolinite, a silicate mineral rich in aluminium. The name “Kaolinite” comes from the Kaoling region in China, where this type of white clay was first discovered and mined centuries ago. The Chinese term “Kāolǐng” means “High Ridge,” referring to the hilly area where the clay deposits were found.
Kaolinite is mined from natural deposits worldwide, with significant sources in China, the United States, and Brazil. It is known for its soft, fine texture and white to off-white colour. Kaolinite is widely used in various industries, including ceramics, cosmetics, and paper manufacturing. In industrial applications, it is a key component in porcelain production, contributing to their smooth and durable textures. It is recommended only for external and not for internal use.
– Face Mask
Mix 1-2 teaspoon of white clay powder with enough water until you get a smooth, spreadable paste. Apply a thin, even layer to clean skin avoiding eyes and lips. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes and rinse off gently with warm water. You can use 1–2 times a week for best results.
– Hair Mask
Mix 2-3 tablespoons white kaolin clay powder with enough water to form a paste. Apply to damp scalp and hair. Leave on for 10–15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and follow with conditioner. Great for removing buildup and refreshing oily scalp.
Storage: White kaolin clay powder should be stored in an airtight, non-metallic container—glass or BPA-free plastic is ideal—in a cool, dry place away from humidity, heat, and direct sunlight. This prevents the clay from absorbing moisture or odors and helps maintain its fine texture and purity over time.
– Bolus alba may remove oil, and impurities without stripping natural moisture while absorbing excess sebum, making it ideal for oily skin.
– Kaolinite has anti-inflammatory properties that may bring immediate relief to inflamed or irritated skin.
– White Kaolin Clay detoxifies the scalp by absorbing excess oil, soothing irritation and removing buildup.
– Kaolin clay’s texture is slightly abrasive yet gentle which makes it an excellent exfoliant that sloughs away dead cells without causing redness or irritation.

– White kaolin clay is generally considered safe ONLY for use on the skin, when used in moderation and in properly formulated products.
– Kaolinite can absorb natural oils, leading to dryness or a tight feeling on the skin, especially for those with dry or sensitive skin.
– Though rare, some people allergic to white clay may face symptoms such as redness, swelling or rash.
– Pregnant and breastfeeding women are allowed to use white kaolin for external uses.
