Couchgrass is an herb with beneficial properties and nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, iron, calcium, magnesium and amino acids. Here are some of the most important health benefits of couchgrass:
- Couchgrass has diuretic properties due to the presence of carbohydrates such as mannitol and inulin. It has traditionally been used for urinary tract infections and other health problems such as kidney or bile stones.
- Further helping the urinary tract, Couch Grass is thought to be extremely effective in relieving an enlarged prostate, cystitis, urethritis and prostatitis. Moreover, the herb is also believed to alleviate rheumatism and gout.

To make an infusion, three to six grams of dried root per 250ml into a ceramic teapot, mug or mason jar for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer) and let steep for 10-15 minutes or overnight.
Decoction: In a pot, bring 3 cups of cold water, 3-4 teaspoons of the root to a simmer.
Gently decoct (simmer) for 30 minutes.
Strain out herbs and return liquid to pot. . Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day.
Add if you want one spoonful of honey at a time and dissolve over very low heat until you reach desired sweetness.
Couch grass is generally thought to be a safe herb, with some reported serious adverse events. Few cases of side effects are enhance heart rate & rhythm, nausea, & vomiting have been reported.
Due to its mild diuretic properties, weed can increase the risk of high blood pressure and cause unusually low potassium levels in the blood. Caution is advised in patients receiving antihypertensive drugs.
