Juniperus communis, Dwarf or Common Juniper, is a species in the genus Juniperus, in the family Cupressaceae. Juniper is a tree that grows wild in some parts of Europe, North America, and Asia. There are many varieties of juniper, but Juniperus communis is the most common in North America.
Most people ingest juniper, often in tea form, the tea which is made is dark brown, clear, with a tarry odor, warm, faintly aromatic, with bitter taste. It is often used as a condiment or a flavoring for foods and beverages such as gin and bitters.
Juniper wood is used for digestion problems including upset stomach, intestinal gas, heartburn, bloating, and loss of appetite, as well as gastrointestinal infections and intestinal worms. This is said to be helpful in treating bronchitis.
Herbal practitioners suggest that drinking juniper tea helps to flush excess fluids from the body. This diuretic effect gets rid of the body’s excess uric acid. High in natural insulin, juniper may also reduce blood sugar levels.
The pharmacological investigations revealed that the plant possessed antimicrobial, hypotensive, cytotoxic, antioxidant, hypoglycaemic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and smooth muscle relaxant effects.
