Description

Latin Name: Cistus Creticus L.

Common Names: ladanum, ladan, or ladanon

Origin Country: Greece

Cretan Labdanum Resin is a highly aromatic, resinous substance derived from the Cistus creticus plant, also known as the Cretan rockrose. It is a perennial shrub that belongs to the Cistaceae family. This resin is primarily found in the Mediterranean region, particularly on the island of Crete, which gives it its name. Cretan Labdanum resin is harvested from the plant’s stems and leaves by various methods, including distillation or scraping the resin that naturally exudes from the plant when it is disturbed or exposed to heat. Labdanum resin has a distinctive, rich, sweet, balsamic, and amber-like fragrance. It is dark in colour, usually ranging from deep brown to black, and has a sticky and viscous texture. The resin has been used for centuries in various cultures, primarily for its aromatic qualities and skincare properties.

– Aromatherapy

Light the charcoal disc until it starts sparking and turns grey around the edges. Place it in your incense burner. Wait a minute or two until it is hot. Drop a small amount of labdanum resin on top. It will bubble, melt, and release fragrant smoke earthy, sweet, and warm.

Only use a small amount as labdanum is very aromatic and long lasting.

– Hair Mask

Gently warm olive oil in a heatproof bowl. Add the labdanum resin to the warm oil. Stir slowly as the resin melts into the oils (this might take a few minutes). Once fully melted and combined, remove from heat. Let it cool slightly so it’s warm but comfortable to touch. Apply the mixture to scalp and hair, focusing on. Massage gently into the scalp for 2–5 minutes and leave it for about 60 minutes.

Storage: Store Cretan labdanum resin in a tightly sealed glass or food‑grade plastic jar and keep it in a cool, dry, and dark place—such as a cupboard away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and humidity—to prevent it from softening, drying out, or losing aroma; if your climate is very warm, you can refrigerate the sealed jar, but let the resin return to room temperature before use to avoid condensation.
