Abelmoschus moschatus, commonly known as musk mallow, is a tropical flowering plant native to India, Southeast Asia, and parts of Australia, and is also found in Africa and Central America. It belongs to the Malvaceae (mallow) family, the same family as okra and hibiscus. Abelmoschus moschatus is harvested by collecting its mature, dried seed pods, which are then split open to extract the small, musky-scented seeds.
These seeds have a sweet, flowery, heavy fragrance quite similar to that of musk. It is used as a spice in the East, and as a musk substitute in perfumery. Known for its rich, sweet like odour, ambrette holds a high value in aromatherapy. In foods, ambrette is an ingredient in bitters, and other products. In manufacturing, ambrette is used in perfumes, colognes, soaps, detergents, creams, and lotions.
Ambrette Tea
Pour 1 cup of hot water over 1-2 teaspoons of ambrette seeds and allow them to steep for about 10–15 minutes. The longer the seeds steep, the stronger and more flavourful the tea will be. Pour the tea into your cup and discard the seeds. Sweeten the tea with a teaspoon of honey if you like a sweeter flavour. Honey also adds soothing properties.
You can drink 1-2 cups per day, especially after meals, to aid in digestion and relieve bloating or indigestion.
For Oral Health
You can chew 1–2 whole Musk Mallow seeds directly. It helps to freshen breath and may support oral hygiene due to its natural antimicrobial properties.
Culinary Uses
Add the ambrette seeds to rice, curries, soups, or baked goods. Use sparingly, as the seeds have a distinct musky, slightly floral flavour. They add unique, fragrant element to various dishes, common in some Asian and African cuisines.
Storage: To store Musk Mallow Dried Whole Seeds (Ambrette Seeds), keep them in a cool, dry, and dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. It’s best to store them in an airtight container, such as a glass jar or a sealed bag, to prevent exposure to moisture and air, which can cause degradation. Ensure the storage environment is well-ventilated and not humid, as this will help maintain the seeds’ quality and prevent mold growth.
