Bixa orellana, commonly known as Annatto, is a flowering plant native to the tropical regions of the Americas, particularly Central and South America. It belongs to the Bixaceae family and is primarily cultivated for its seeds, which are known for their bright red to orange colour. Its seeds are used both as a natural flavouring or colouring agent in food, cosmetics and for their flavour in traditional dishes. It has a slightly nutty, sweet and peppery taste.
