Description

Latin Name: Cinnamomum Camphora L.

Common Names: Camphor Gum

Origin Country: China

Cinnamomum camphora, commonly known as camphor tree, is a large evergreen tree native to China, Japan, and Taiwan but is also widely cultivated in other warm climates. It belongs to the Lauraceae family and is known for its strong aromatic properties due to the presence of camphor, an essential oil extracted from its wood, bark, and leaves. This plant is valued both for its medicinal properties and as an ornamental tree due to its dense canopy and resistance to pests.

Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) is a natural compound that is typically found in the wood of the camphor tree. Camphor is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Camphor is usually found as white, crystalline solid or in the form of blocks. It has a strong, aromatic odour, which is somewhat medicinal and refreshing. Natural Camphor derived directly from the camphor tree or other plants in the Lauraceae family. The process involves distilling the essential oil from the wood of the tree and then crystallizing camphor.

– How to Use Camphor Blocks as Incense:

Always use camphor blocks in a heat-resistant, fireproof dish or incense holder. This will help catch any residue and protect surfaces from heat damage. You can place it on a ceramic dish, metal tray, or any container designed to safely hold incense or burning substances.  Use a match or a lighter to light one corner of the camphor block. Be careful when handling fire. Camphor blocks can ignite quickly, so light it gently and allow it to start burning. Once lit, the camphor block will release a fragrance into the air. You can let it burn for several minutes or until the block has fully evaporated. It is normal for the vapour to be noticeable but not overly strong.

Storage:  Store natural camphor blocks in a tightly sealed, non‑metallic container (glass or high‑grade plastic) kept in a cool, dry, well‑ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, sparks, or open flames; camphor is volatile and flammable, so good sealing prevents the blocks from sublimating and preserves their aroma while minimizing fire risk.

– Camphor can help with respiratory issues, acting as a decongestant and a mild expectorant, making it useful for colds.

– It has natural analgesic properties, which can ease muscle and joint pain when applied topically.

– The strong odour of camphor helps to repel insects, including mosquitoes. Placing pieces of camphor in corners of rooms or using it in oils can keep bugs away.
