Mucuna pruriens, commonly known as velvet bean or cowhage, is a tropical legume belonging to the Fabaceae (pea) family. It is native to Africa and tropical Asia but is also found in the Caribbean and parts of South America. The plant is a fast-growing, climbing vine that produces long, slender pods covered in fine, itchy hairs. The pods contain shiny, dark brown or black seeds, which are known for their herbal properties. Mucuna powder has a mildly nutty and bitter flavour, when used in cooking.
