Passionflower is a bitter, sedative, cooling herb that relieves pain,relaxes spasms and lowers blood pressure. Contains dozens of chemicals including carotenoids, flavonoids and some others such as maltol, chrysin, alginate and some flavorings.
The flower of passion has a hypotensive effect (lowers blood pressure) and also relieves tachycardia (fast heart rate.)
It has analgesic properties making it useful in period pains, headache due to overexertion, toothache, neuropathy, gastrointestinal nerve disorders.
The anti-convulsant effect makes this herb useful in treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, seizures and hysteria.
Asthma, especially with a high level of spasmodic activity, responds well to the use of passion flowers.
It is also reported to be helpful in assisting withdrawal from addictive drugs, including benzodiazepines and Valium.
To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew.
Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer).
Allow the mixture to steep for 10 ‘to 15’ minutes or overnight.
Then strain the tea and serve. Add if you want honey, milk or lemon wedge for flavour.
Passiflora is generally considered safe to use medicinally short-term but possible side effects may include dizziness, confusion, irregular muscle action and coordination, altered consciousness, and inflamed blood vessels.
Take passiflora for two to six weeks at a time. Be sure to take a two week break before resuming use.
