Description

Latin Name: Arthrospira Platensis

Origin Country: China

Arthrospira platensis, commonly known as spirulina, is a type of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that belongs to the family Arthrospira. It is naturally found in warm, alkaline lakes, particularly in regions such as Central and South America, Africa, and Asia. This organism typically appears as a spiral-shaped, filamentous structure that forms colonies of intertwining, coiled filaments. Its colour is  distinctive blue-green, which comes from its rich content of chlorophyll and phycocyanin pigments.

To transform Arthrospira platensis into powder, the algae are first harvested from its growing environment. After harvesting, the algae undergo a drying process to remove the moisture and preserve its nutrients, resulting in a fine, green powder that retains the majority of its nutritional properties.

Spirulina is incorporated into smoothies, juices and even as a food colouring agent in various products. In terms of flavour, spirulina has a strong, somewhat slightly bitter, earthy or seaweed-like taste.

– Spirulina Smoothie

One of the most popular ways to consume spirulina powder is by blending it into a smoothie. Simply add 1-2 teaspoons of spirulina powder to 1 cup of milk and blend until it smooth. The flavour can be strong, so balance it with sweet fruits like bananas, mangoes, or berries.

– Spirulina Infusion

If you want a quick and simple way to consume spirulina, mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of spirulina powder with a glass of water or juice. You can add lemon juice or a pinch of sea salt to improve the flavour.

– Culinary Uses

You can stir spirulina powder into soups, stews, or other warm dishes at the end of cooking. This is a good way to add nutrients without altering the texture of your meals. Be mindful of the flavour, as it might become more noticeable in hot dishes.

Storage: To store spirulina powder, keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Avoid exposure to humidity or strong odors, as spirulina easily absorbs moisture and smells, which can affect its quality and taste.
