Latin Name: Plantago Arenaria

Common Names: Sand Plantain, Desert Indianwheat

Parts Used: Seeds, Husks

Origin Country: Poland

Plantago arenaria, commonly known as black psyllium, is a plant species belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. Native to parts of Southern Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, black psyllium grows in sandy soils, often in dry and arid environments, which is reflected in its name “arenaria,” meaning “of the sand.”

The plant is a low-growing annual herb with narrow, lance-shaped leaves and small, inconspicuous flowers arranged on spike-like inflorescences. The seeds are small, dark brown to black, oval-shaped, and encased in thin husks, thus it is called black psyllium. The seeds are often consumed in smoothies, juices or yogurts as they have a very mild, neutral, or slightly earthy flavour.

Black Psyllium Smoothie

Add 1-2 teaspoons of whole psyllium seeds and 1 cup of milk or yogurt into a blender. Blend until they smooth and then pour into a glass. This can help with digestion and provide a fibre boost. You can adjust the level of sweetness depending on your preference. For additional natural sweetness, you can add fruits like bananas or apples.

Mix with Juices

Measure 1-2 teaspoons of whole psyllium seeds and add them directly to 1 cup of water or juice (such as apple juice, orange juice, or any juice of your choice). Stir well to ensure that the seeds are evenly distributed. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes to allow the seeds to absorb the liquid and expand. You will notice that they will swell up and form a gel-like consistency. Once it has thickened, you can enjoy it.

Storage: To store Black Psyllium Dried Whole Seeds, place them in an airtight container and keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. For longer shelf life, especially in warmer climates, you can also store them in the refrigerator to help maintain freshness and prevent insect activity.

– The fibre in black psyllium can help create a feeling of fullness, which may reduce appetite and assist in weight management.

– The gel-like consistency that psyllium forms can act as a natural detoxifier, helping to flush out harmful substances.
