Senna alexandrina, commonly known as senna or Alexandrian senna, is a plant species belonging to the Fabaceae family. Senna alexandrina is a small shrub native to North Africa, particularly Egypt, Sudan, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. It typically grows up to one meter in height and has yellow flowers with five petals. The plant produces elongated, oblong-shaped pods containing seeds.
The dried leaves and sometimes the pods of Senna alexandrina are used to prepare herbal remedies for constipation relief.
It is a sweet, cooling and laxative herb. Cassia senna typically has a mild to moderate door. The scent can be described as slightly earthy, herbal, or vegetal. It has a distinctly bitter taste.
