Latin Name: Vaccinium Myrtillus L.
Origin Country: Albania
Vaccinium myrtillus, commonly known as bilberry or European blueberry, is a small deciduous shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. It is native to Europe, parts of Asia, and North America, typically found in acidic, well-drained soils in forests, heathlands, and mountainous regions. The plant produces small, dark blue or black berries. These berries have been used most commonly for culinary uses. Dried, bilberries tend to have a more concentrated, mildly sour taste. They are often used in jams, jellies, desserts, and herbal teas due to their rich, flavourful profile. Our bilberry berries contain sugar.
Bilberry Tea
To make an infusion, steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried bilberry leaves in hot water for about 5-10 minutes. Strain the leaves and enjoy the tea plain or with honey for sweetness. You can drink bilberry tea up to three times a day.
You can add them sparingly to soups, stews, or sauces for a hint of flavour and potential health benefits. Keep in mind that bilberry leaves have a slightly bitter taste, so adjust the quantity according to your preferences.
