Shepherd’s purse contains flavonoids, glycosides, various amines,volatile oil carotenoids and vitamins A, B, C and K.
The herb’s medicinal properties are probably not due to any particular substance but to the interaction between them.
Anti-scorbutic : It is quite beneficial for gastrointestinal conditions such as chronic diarrhea, colic, dysentery and promotes bowel movements through intestinal contraction.
Stimulant : It helps to excites or quickens the functional activity of the tissues by giving more energy and is thus occasionally recommended as a general tonic.
Vasoconstrictor and cardiovascular : Shepherd’s Purse is a circulation equalizing herb which helps to normalizes circulation regulates heart action and may help to correct high or low blood pressure.
Diuretic : It increases the volume and flow of urine which help to clean the urinary system.
To make an infusion, three to six grams of dried root per 250ml into a ceramic teapot, mug or mason jar for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer) and let steep for 10-15 minutes or overnight
Shepherd’s purse is known to cause some side effects, such as changes in blood pressure and/or thyroid function, drowsiness, and heart palpitations.
