Traditional European medicine has attributed several medicinal properties to artichoke. Artichoke leaves are low in fat while rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Particularly high in folate and vitamins C and K, they also supply important minerals, such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and iron.

–  Artichoke has been used for liver diseases (eg hepatitis and jaundice).

–  It is rich in inulin, a type of fiber that is marketed as a dietary supplement and improves the balance of gut bacteria.

–  The Artichoke leaves have diuretic properties.

–  It helps the function of the gallbladder and relieve gastrointestinal problems. Artichoke alleviates constipation, diarrhea and indigestion.

–  Artichoke also lower cholesterol and high blood sugar levels.

–  It is used as part of diets aimed at losing weight.

To make an infusion, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in a tea infuser or teapot or mug for each cup of tea you intend to brew. Cover with boiling water. Place on the lid (or cover your cup with a saucer). Allow the mixture to steep for 10' to 15' minutes or overnight. Then strain the tea and serve. Drink 1-3 cups of tea a day.
Artichoke leaf is generally considered safe, with few side effects. It however, can cause allergic reactions. People who are at greater risk for allergic reactions are those who are allergic to similar herbs. Don't use artichoke leaf if you have gallstones. In any case you should consult with your healthcare doctor before using any herb especially if you’re taking other medications or having health problems.
